Are You Getting Enough Sleep? Most People Don’t!

Sleep, Do you get enough sleep every night?  How important is sleep?  What happens when you sleep?  What happens if you don’t get enough sleep?  These are questions I have been asking myself.  I wear a Fitbit Blaze and it monitors my sleep by movement of my wrist in which I am wearing the Fitbit and by my heart rate.  Over the course of several weeks it has become very clear that I do not get enough sleep.  I had all ready assumed this, and now the Fitbit clarifies it a bit better.  I am averaging about 5 hours of sleep a night, clearly not enough because I am tired a lot, fatigued, take naps, lack of motivation, having difficulty with weight loss, and just plain cranky.

I did some research and sleep is very important.  It is when our body repairs and rejuvenates itself.  We have sleep cycles and each stage in the sleep cycle is important and helps our body.

Understanding Sleep Cycles: What Happens While You Sleep

Not getting enough sleep can cause a host of problems, as I am experiencing some myself right now.  So I am going to try to work on this.  Getting to bed earlier is the main issue for me.  I notice with my Fitbit that I generally go to bed no earlier than 11:00, most of the time it is 11:30 or closer to 12:00 and then I am up at 6:00.  So right there I am not getting enough sleep.  Plus, I am easily awakened by noises, the cat or dog, and God know what else, then it is hard to get back to sleep.  Not sure what I am going to do about that, but I will work on it.  My husband and son need more sleep also.  My son stays up too late and my husband does not get good quality sleep.  More stuff I need to work on as I can see that these are real issues that need to be addressed.

What to do if you are not getting enough sleep.

Starting this weight loss journey has me looking into other areas that I really did not consider, like sleep and how that can make a huge difference.  The human body is quite amazing in the way it functions.  Your body will tell you what it needs, most people just don’t listen.  Most people sleep when it is convenient for them not when it is best for the body.  We live in a society that is always in a hurry, not enough hours in the day to get everything done, life in the fast lane, I could go on and on, but you get the picture.  If you don’t take care of your body, it will stop working for you, it is as simple as that.  I don’t get enough get enough sleep, drink enough water and have issue because of this.  My lower body had become so weak that I had difficulty walking upstairs.  I could not get up from the floor without pushing up on the floor or grabbing something to help me up.  This was really pathetic.  Because of my weight and the fact that I sit too much for too long a period, my lower body became weak and my knees had a hard time functioning.  I am walking every day and this has improved, but I still have a ways to go.  But my point is if you do not take care of your body, it will let you know and eventually quit working for you.  If you take care of your body, it will take care of you.

  1. Sleep is so very important! I know for the longest time I wasn’t getting enough sleep and it contributed to three health conditions. Once I started sleeping more in addition to a few other changes I started getting better quicker. Thanks for all this info!

This is an eye-opener. I will take what I just read into account, and make better choices. Good work!
